Experience & Feedback

After the first two editions of the spring semesters 2014 and 2015 we can look back on many positive experiences. The students enjoyed the interactive exercises during the excursions and the heads of excursion appreciated the simplicity with which the technology could be employed.

All participants were impressed by the amount of data which could be collected in 30 - 45 minutes. Additionally, conducting the experiments after the lunch break helped to reactivate the students.

Potential for improvement exists mainly concerning the questions posed and the evaluation phase. Further, it is important to allocate enough time to the evaluation phase, since elaborate discussions ensued.

Feedback

"The experiment was interesting and fun. It supported my understanding of wind and its variability on a slope and at a certain height."

"I found the experiment fascinating and informative."

Sara Dos Reis (student, 2014)

"I liked a lot that we actively recorded data and that we did not only have to listen."

"The self-conducted experiment helped to remember the results well. Better than if the results had been presented theoretically. However, the results could already be anticipated at the beginning of the experiment."

Nina Rappold (student, 2014)

"I would have liked to know about further applications of GIS."

"I found this scientific part very revealing. It was impressive how the variability of the wind could be illustrated with the experiment."

"It was cool to be able to record so much data in such a short period of time."

"I experienced the difficulty of recording a useful amount of data and I learned methods to solve this problem. In addition, I was observing nature more closely afterwards."

Prof. Dr. Heini Wernli (2014)

"I was fascinated how a complex phenomenon - i.e. the variability of wind in a complex terrain - can be captured, visually presented and immediately discussed with a group of 30 students within a short period of time."
